Huahine is the last island to visit before sailing back to Tahiti. Looking very much forward to explore another lush and green island for more walking and snorkeling in the lagoons and passes. The wind in this area is mostly moderate and from the east, so sailing west is sailing against the wind.
The distance is only 20 nautical miles but a sailboat cannot sail against the wind. Anchoring in 2 meters depth with 16m of chain out. Of cause the wind blows us further onto the reef until the chain holds. One depth meter says 90cm while the other shows MINUS 70cm!
Quickly mask, snorkel and fins on and overboard to have a look in the crystal clear water. Ooops…only 10cm water under the keel, thats enough for now but not a good idea to stay here. It is full moon so high tides and there might be wind and waves later.
Fare Huahine has a perfect yachtclub with a very good vibe. Friday and Saturday happy hour is five to six and then its party time with many international cruisers enjoying each others company. And there is a gig, an American cruiser with 2 local percussionists, American Country rock and blues. They play as if they are doing that every night and o what a voice this cruiser has!
We met him the next morning again while tieing up the dinghy at the dock, a long chat about the Sunday ritual in Huahine: the local people prepare food and start bringing it to the port at six o’clock in the morning to sell it but also to share and eat together. We bought bread, bananas and egg rolls. Very tasty..
