Malaka Queen is back in Dar Es Salaam slipway. This time to pick up a friend from Holland and his son. They will come on holiday for a few weeks to explore Tanzania and the Zanzibar archipelago. They have marine spare parts with them so they will have heavy luggage. As always Ruben, taxi driver from Dar Es Salaam will drive me to the airport. At arrival there is a little problem with customs. They want VAT and import tax over the marine parts, 50 USD total. We get all luggage on board and after a good sleep the world looks different. We buy fresh vegetables and fruit at a shop nearby slipway. Time for the moment of truth, the very first sail for my new crew as they have never been on a sailing yacht before! Kwale island is a short downwind sail, a good start.
We meet these locals on the way.
The next leg is to the North
We sail to Stonetown. Pemba/Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania have separate governments
We sail to Ras Nungwe in the North of Zanzibar and pass Prison Island
The 2 pictures below show the clash between tourism and the original inhabitants.
The government has given foreigners permission to build hotels between the village and the sea.
These hotels bring their own staff and do not employ the villagers. The only thing the villagers can do now is continue to use their beach and the sea. Protesters are locked up.
